In response to recent inquiries about Bowerman Basin, birders should also
check out Bottle Beach, a mudflat area near Westport. It's 2.5 miles
west of the Elk slough bridge on the way to Westport from Aberdeen. A
friend and I went out to Bowerman Saturday afternoon (supposedly prime
time) and were disappointed at the poor showing of birds there, probably
less than 200 total. Bottle Beach provided us with 4500-5000 birds, of
10 species. There were birds as far as we could see in both directions,
so it's a pretty good show when the tides aren't high enough to push them
into Bowerman. Also Rock Sandpipers on the Ocean Shores Jetty. Take
your boots.
