Subject: July 1993 Auk out at last

My copy of the July 1993 Auk with the 39th Supplement to the AOU Checklist
arrived yesterday. No surprises there, but a paper I had expected was delayed.
The rest of the issue was a bit drier (to me) than usual. But the Supplement
is NOW OFFICIAL for AOU lists. The ABA Checklist Supplement that adopts ALL of
the taxonomic changes was mailed to Birding this AM and should appear late
this year. Summary to be posted in June or so.

Subject: Eurasian Jackdaw split

I recently saw in a local bookstore the new book on Crows and Jays by
Madge and Burn. I happened to notice that the authors split Eurasian
Jackdaw into two species. As I recall, these two species were named
Western Jackdaw and Daurian Jackdaw. They indicated that these two species
are sympatric in the Lake Baikal region and they do not interbreed.

Subject: Turtle Doves, Jackdaws and Caged Birds in Australia

. collared doves ... There are 16
members of this genus according to last count, 3 of which were
introduced and are currently breeding in the US and 7 of which are
commonly referred to as collared doves.

1) Collared Dove or Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)--
Collared Dove is most commonly used in the English speakers in countries
where this bird is native. This birds native range is most of Europe and
the Middle East. There are a wide variety of African and Asian doves of
this genus which are also called collared dove. This one, S. decaocta,
first came from the Caribbean into Florida and has migrated northward.
Possibly other introductions??

2) Spotted Dove or Spotted Turtle Dove or Spotted Neck Dove (Streptopelia
chinensis)--This bird was introduced to Los Angelas just after the turn of
the century and has spread throughout southern California. This birds
native range is East Asia. This is also the streptopelia introduced and
widespread in Australia and Tasmania. Several people have claimed to have
the 'collared dove' in California--which one is it???? Unless there have
been new introductions, I don't see how S. decaocto got from Florida to
southern California so fast. Have there been new introductions of S.
decaocto into California?

3) Ringed Turtle Dove or Ring-necked Dove (Streptopelia risoria/capicola)
This is a common escape in bigger American cities and has bred in many of
them including Miami and Los Angelas. The scientific name is confused
here due to recent changes in Africa where it is native. Anthony Lang of
Ontario wrote a poignant article on this a few days ago. Anthony is S.
risoria the proper nomenclature or S. capicola? I am under the impression
that the latter is now the preferred scietific name, but I am not sure.

.

Also in reference to the jackdaws, I believe the Russians and British have
always separated Corvus monedula (Jackdaw) from Corvus dauuricus (Daurian
Jackdaw).
