Subject: Summer birding position

The University of Maine Wildlife Department will be conducting surveys
of birds on lakes in New England, New York and New Jersey this summer as
part of EPA's EMAP Surface Waters program. Two-person crews (one
ornithologist, one habitat recorder) will be go round each lake and do
point counts at each census point in late May through early July.

One of our initial recruits is failing to reach the standard of
identification needed and we are therefore unexpectedly short one
ornithologist for this work. We are soliciting applications for the
remaining position. We need a good birder, able to identify birds by sight
and sound. Training tapes can be made available in advance and field
training will be provided in Maine in May. Pay is $8.23 per hour based on
a 37.5 hour week, plus a $40 per day payment in lieu of providing
accomodation. (Field crew are then free to camp or spend the money on
motel or whatever). We can also pay a return air fare to Maine.

If anyone is unemployed from mid-May through the first week in
July and is interested in being paid to count birds in the northeast, call
Drew Allen at (207) 581-2869. I'll be happy to provide further details if
a local call is preferred initially (503-754-4486)
