Jim, you will find most of the same birds in quiet, less crowded conditions
in the Elk Heights area just off I-90 between Cle Elum and Thorp. It's
actually a lot closer to Seattle than is Wenas (but not to Walla Walla,
depending on your route). I wrote a site guide to this area in an issue of
WOSNews last year (June I think). White-headed Woodpeckers are much harder
to locate at Elk Heights, though, and so far I haven't found any Pygmy
Nuthatches there, or nesting Fox Sparrows.

I used to enjoy visiting Wenas Campground to see the birds which occur in
the area. However, things seem to have changed: logging, slash-and-burn,
ORVs (LOTS of noise), and an archery convention which shows up every time
I do (I'm sick of dodging arrows).

Does another location exist somewhere in the vicinity of Wenas that has
the same type of birds?
