Any of the canyons on the east side of the Cascades is full of similar
birds--Robinson, Manastash, Ahtanum in Kittitas counties and others to the
south in Yakima Co. The open ponderosa pines of Wenas Creek feature
White-headed Woodpecker, Gray Flycatcher and Pygmy Nuthatch that aren't
found in the varied habitats of the Kittitas Co. canyons, although all 3 do
occur in other canyons to the south of Wenas and more sparingly in
Kittitas. Look at the DeLorme Atlas, find a canyon with a road in it, and
go for it! We need to do more exploring, less returning to the same old
place year after year (I'm as guilty of seeking security as anyone else).
