We made a rather brief trip across the mountains, Wednesday through
Friday, and even though some of the best woodpecker areas were off-limits
because of the fires, we were delighted to find a beautiful pair of
Three-toed Woodpeckers as well as Red-naped Sapsuckers right at White
Pass. The Three-toed were very easy to watch as they moved through the
woods just to the west of the lodge and the slope down toward the lake,
behind the lodge. We then went to the Wenas Creek campground, camped
there, hiked around quite a bit expecting to see White-headed at any
moment, but didn't have Scott Ray's great luck. (Sniff!)

BTW, comments from several people about the ecology of fire in the
forests were very interesting and useful. Thanks.
