Hello, you have reached the Seattle Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for
Wednesday, August 10, 1994. This is Russell Rogers filling in for the Bird
Brain. To skip the details and just leave a message, punch 5 and wait for

A HORNED PUFFIN in breeding plumage was seen at the Jetty at Ocean Shores on
August 7th. It was seen in very large flock of feeding birds at the mouth of
Gray's Harbor, including 10,000+ RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, about 10,000 HEERMAN'S
GULLS, and several thousand other assorted Gulls.

At Sequim, in Clallam County, a BLACK-SHOULDERED KITE has been seen off and
on since the begining of July. It was last seen on August 7th, about 3 miles
north of Sequim near the mouth of the Dungeness River. Other sightings were
from US 101 near the State Police Barracks about 10 miles west of Sequim and
on US 101 at Carlsborg Road. Which is about 2 miles west of the Dungeness
Bridge. Dory Smith in Sequim, would be greatful for any further sightings of

At the Everett STP on August 9th, 4 BLACK TERNS, 3 juveniles and one adult
in breeding plumage, were seen. A flock of 83 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES on the
ponds that day included 5 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and 5 FRANKLIN'S GULL were
with several hundred BONAPARTE'S GULLS. BLACK SWIFTS have been been seen
regularly over the ponds sometimes in large numbers. On July 30th over 550
were seen. Maxium numbers are usually seen before 8:00 AM.

The Tern colony at the Everett Marina still had a pair ARCTIC TERNS tending
young on July 30th. Several hundred CASPIAN TERNS were still present thought
their numbers are decreasing as the young birds fledge. On August 9th,
PURPLE MARTINS are still being seen at the pilings north of the
Marina.

The Portland OR, Rare Bird Alert, reports that ELEGANT TERNS were seen
at the south jetty of Columbia River mouth on July 24th. People birding on
the outer coast should keep an eye out for this species in Washington.

At Green Lake in Seattle, a possible imm. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen
on August 6th. This species is rare in King county. An further sightings of
this bird would be greatly appreciated.

A second hand report of a SNOWY EGRET at Moses Lake in eastern Washington,
was recived for August 5th or 6th. It was seen at the northwest fishing
access, just south of I-90 near the Heron rookery along with many GREAT
EGRETS. In other Heron news a pair of GREEN HERONS were seen at the
MontLake Fill on August 6th.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at Ocean Shores on July 31st. Kestrels are a
uncommon find around Gray's Harbor. Shore bird migration as been somewhat
slow so far this season. The best birds reported for the region have been a
of a BAR-TAILED GODWIT and a RUFF seen at Boundry Bay in British Columbia.

At Ocean Shores on July 31st, 3 PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVERS were reported at the
Game Range with BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. On August 7th, also at Ocean Shores a
WILLET was seen near the base of Damon Point, in with a flock of 70
WHIMBRELS and 20 MARBLED GODWITS. At the pond on Damon Point a BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER and a PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were present that same day.

At the Tidal Flats north of the Everett Marina 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were
seen with several hundred LEAST and WESTERN SANDPIPERS on August 9th. On
Whidby Island, on July 30th a few SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were seen at
Crockett Lake and at Swantown. At Penn Cove 10-15 RUDDY TURNSTONES were
seen with about 20 BLACK TURNSTONES and a few WHIMBRELS. A PECTORAL
SANDPIPER was at the Hyatt Resort STP at Snoquailmie Pass on July 30. A
RED PHALAROPE was reported from Vashion Island at the Dockton boat lanch on
July 31st.
