Gregg Recer mentioned the skimmers at a Dow Chemical plant in Texas. As it
happens, I have a children's picture book about those very skimmers. It is
called "Skimmers", by Downs Matthews, photographs by Dan Guravich, and is
published by Simon and Schuster. It was remaindered last fall, and may
still be around for much less than its $13.95 sticker price. It has quite a
few good pictures of black skimmers, mostly at the Dow rookery, but some on
anonymous beaches. It claims that about 800 chicks are raised each year in
the Dow parking lot!
