Bob Whitson suggests a thread on birds in literature.

Coincidentally, the Sept issue of Maryland Yellowthroat (the newsletter of
the Maryland Ornithological Society) includes a review of a new book by
Leonard Lutwack entitled "Birds in Literature," published by University Press
of Florida. The Review also mentions two other books on birds and lit: Peggy
Munsterberg's "Penguin Book of Bird Poetry" (Penguin) and John Burrough's
"Songs of Nature" (McClure).

Curson, Jon, David Quinn, and David Beadle. 1994. Warblers of the
Americas. [It just came out this past week.]

There is also one on sparrows for which I have no information. I
understand that it does not cover American sparrows, however.

I happen to be in proud possession of a readily-available trade paperback
entitled "An Exaltation of Larks" by James Lipton. There is no way I can
regale you with all of it's wonderful text on the origins of this type of
naming of groups (called Venery) So READ it!! it's great. Seems to be
the murky ancestorship of this stuff was the gentleman hunter and his
search for elegant and even romantic ways to describe the objects of the
hunt. back to the early 1300's. Quite a provenance.

Add to your list Angela Turner and Chris Rose, "Swallows & Martins:
An Identification Guide and Handbook", Boston, Houghton Mifflin,
1989, 258 pg., ISBN 0395511747, $35 suggested. I've seen it for as
low as $10.

There are two others in the series: Kingfishers, Beeaters and Rollers (sorry,
don't know author) and Finches and Sparrows (Peter Clement). The latter,
although it does not cover American sparrows, is excellent on finches and bunti
ngs, including some potential N. Am. vagrants such as Rustic or Little Bunting.

I also heard a rumor (can anyone confirm?) that there is an update on the
Seabirds book planned.

Finally. Claudia Wilds is doing a book for the series on Terns and Skimmers
and there is one being done by a British author on Gulls. Originally they
were to be combined, but differences in schedule and amount of material
led to the separation of the books. Claudia is still writing and reviewing'
illustrations so I assume the book is a ways from publication.
