Great post--thanks, Carla--for all the info!
And for those of you with children (and also those of you WITHOUT--),
check out Brian Wildsmith's _BIRDS_. My copy is dated 1967, from Franklin
Watts, but it may have been reprinted. Brian Wildsmith has taken several
of these collective nouns and illustrated them, so that the pictures
reflect the name... (which is probably how the bird group GOT its name,
after all... one of those circular things...)
The watercolors are realistic, the collective nouns are "true," as far as
I have read, and the images are very engaging, both for kids and for
adults. Hope you (and your kids--) enjoy this book.

AND-- here's my chance to say: We have a VERY creative group here on
Tweeters! There were some wonderful collective nouns invented this week--
.sorry... I can't remember and attribute them, but you know who you are...
a TANGLE of Knots
and
a CONTRADICTION of Solitaires
were VERY creative! Thanks for all that creative uprising of late!
There were more. You guys are amazing! Who needs BIRDCHAT?! Cheers--EllenB
