Hello, this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Alert. This recording was
made Thursday, December 1st. If you have anything to add, call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.
On NOV 28 a bright ROSS' GULL was observed below McNary dam, near Umatilla.
It flies up and down the Columbia River from the dam to the bridge and back,
on both sides of the river. It is best seen near the dam, either on the
observation platform at the dam, or from shore in the wildlife area. While in
the area do not enter the area with newly sown grass; and obey posted signs.
While at the dam look for COMMON and PACIFIC LOONS; GLAUCOUS, WESTERN, and MEW
GULLS, and an OLDSQUAW, which have been seen during the week.
The WHOOPER SWAN continues to be seen at Summer Lake, and has moved farther
into the refuge and has been seen at the Gold Pond impoundment. Check with the
Management Area headquarters for the latest word and directions. A [GRAY-
CROWNED] ROSY-FINCH was at Summer Lake headquarters NOV 25. Two [AMERICAN]
TREE SPARROWS have been in the area. A HARRIS' SPARROW regularly comes to the
feeder at the bed and breakfast across the street.
The COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen at Agate Beach, as well as the
BLUE JAY south of the Newport airport. To reach the BLUE JAY, turn off HWY 101
onto 98th Street. Continue to Cedar Street. Turn on to Cedar and check the
neighborhood. It comes to 9540 SE Cedar. The YELLOW-BILLED LOON continues to
be seen in Yaquina Bay between the jetties. An OLDSQUAW and 2 ROCK SANDPIPERS
were at the south jetty of Yaquina Bay NOV 23. Up to 70 ANCIENT MURRELETS,
3 OLDSQUAWS, and 3 CASSIN'S AUKLETS have been seen during the week off Yaquina
Head.
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was on the Columbia River at Brownsmead, east of Astoria,
NOV 27; and one is still being seen at Ft. Canby boat ramp near the north
jetty of the Columbia River [Washington state].
Two TRUMPETER SWANS wearing green collars were on Sauvie Island NOV 25. Three
TRUMPETERS were on a farm field near Canby NOV 23 and 24, but have since moved
on. A male SURF SCOTER was on Roslyn Lake, near Sandy, NOV 24.
A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was in Cascade Gateway Park, in Salem, NOV 26.
Another [RED-BREASTED MERGANSER] was at the mouth of the Deschutes River the
next day.
A BLACK SWAN and 3 EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL were at Jackson Bottom at
Hillsboro NOV 25.
A female PINE GROSBEAK was in south Salem NOV 26.
A flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was in Bend NOV 28.
(Keep an eye out for Snowy Owls. None have been seen in Oregon yet, but they
are now moving southward.)
Tuesday DEC 6 is Birder's Night at Portland Audubon. Meet at Audubon House at
7:30 p.m. It should be a very interesting meeting.
That's it for this week.
