{Hi Maia,

Bob Boekelheide and I went down to McNary today (Saturday 3 Dec.). The gull
apparently has not been seen since Thursday (1 Dec.). There are lots of
other gulls about, as well as a Pacific Loon. Other good spots nearby: 1)
Burbank Slough at McNary Refuge (just south of Pasco is very "ducky," along
with swans-both Trumpeter and Tundra. The 1-mile nature trail from
headquarters was especially nice. Swamp Sparrow, many robins, gobs of
Mallards and Canvasbacks. So, even if you don't see the Ross' Gull, theres
still lots to see in the Lower Columbia Basin. 2) Try also the roads west
of Walla Walla south of Hwy 12 for the many birds of prey attracted to
alfalfa fields. 3) The "poop" piles south of Wallula on Hwy 12 (opposite
the Boise Cascade paper mill) are great for gulls, blackbirds, starlings
and House Sparrows. Always lots to see there. 4) The Richland waterfront at
Nelson Island is a wonderful place to walk. Lots of gulls and waterfowl.
Usually Eurasian Wigeon about on the lawns too.
