Subject: Bird name abbreviation systems

The current discussion of various bird abbreviation systems
has inspired me to put up several relevant items on the
World Wide Web.

================

ABSTRACT

1. Design goals for a robust bird code system.
2. Survey of existing code systems: AOU numbers and four-letter
code systems from the Bird Banding Lab, the Breeding Bird
Surveys, and a variant proposed in "Birding" magazine.
A file defining all Bird Banding Lab codes is included.
3. An original and improved system, including a file defining
all the codes.

Subject: Texas biodiversity info source

Many people have expressed their interest in birding the diverse
habitats of Texas. For those with WWW access, there is an interesting
source of information at the Texas A and M Plant Diversity
Information Center. The address is
http://straylight.tamu.edu/tamu/pdic.html

At this WWW site, you can pull up maps showing the annual rainfall,
number of frost-free days or vegetation maps. There are brief
descriptions of the 10 vegetation regions in Texas with a few
references to birds. Mostly, the focus is on the vascular plants of
Texas, but I think the information adds to the overall birding
experience.
