This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington
bird hotline for Friday, December 16. If you wish to bypass this
recording and simply leave a message for me, including the date of
your sighting and the DeLorme atlas page number if you have it,
push the star button on your telephone now.

The YELLOW-BILLED LOON at the marina in Harrison, Kootenai County,
Idaho first reported by Stan Kvern on December 3, was seen this
past week by Carole Vande Voorde. Try looking for it from the
marina, the rock jetty, or from Pine Street behind the grain
elevator. You may also try Harlo Point Road. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 60, halfway between b- and c-1. To get to Harlo Point, head
north out of Harrison, cross the Coeur d'Alene River via the
iron truss bridge, turn left onto the first road.
.
A SNOWY OWL was seen south of Genesee, Idaho on December 10. The
bird was actually in Nez Perce County. To get to the location,
head south along US 95 from the Genesee Junction. At the top of
the hill, head east until you get to Archibald Road. Turn right,
south, and travel along until you see some equipment in the
field. The bird was frequenting this area. See Idaho DeLorme p.
58, c-1.
.
I saw several flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS on the Palouse on Thursday,
December 15. One flock was along US 95 at the top of the Lewiston
grade in Nez Perce, County. The second flock of about 20 birds
was between mile post 329 and 330 south of the Genesee Junction
along US 95. Genesee is on Idaho DeLorme p. 58, c-1.
.
Mike Denny reports an adult GLAUCOUS GULL on the poop piles just
north of the Wallula pulp mile along US 12 in Walla Walla County.
It's in with a flock of Ring-billed Gulls. See Washington
DeLorme, p. 40, d-1.
.
John Hirth and I observed a BEWICK'S WREN in a hawthorne thicket
southeast of Moscow, Latah County, Idaho. The bird was last seen
today, December 16. Dan Svingen and I observed a single
LONG-EARED OWL on the south side of Paradise Ridge, Latah County,
Idaho, this afternoon, December 16 and about 3 miles further south
saw a SHORT-EARED OWL. To get to the birds, head east from Moscow
on Idaho 8. From the traffic light in front of Tidyman's, go 1.3
miles to Lenville Road. Turn right onto Lenville and follow it
through the trailer park. To get to the BEWICK'S WREN, stay
left. As you head up the hill, you'll see a large thicket on the
right, posted by "Pheasants Forever." If you'd like to try for
the owls, instead of staying left, stay right after the trailer
park and follow Blaine Road over Paradise Ridge. At the summit,
turn right onto Iverson Loop if you have 4-wheel drive. If you
don't, follow Blaine until it intersects again with Iverson Loop.
There's a thicket near an abandoned home where the snow plow stops
plowing with the LONG-EARED OWL. Follow Blaine Road south another
3 miles to the location of the SHORT-EARED OWL. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 58, c-1.
.
John Hirth saw a SHORT-EARED OWL just north of Pullman, Whitman
County, Washington, on December 12. To get to the bird, head
north out of Pullman along Washington 27 about 0.5 mile to Whelan
Road. Head east on Whelan about 3 miles to a nice thicket where
Short-eareds frequent. See Washington DeLorme p. 57, halfway
between b- and c-7.
.
Marty Hirth reports a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL at her residence along
Four Mile Road near Viola, Latah County, Idaho. Also at the Hirth
feeder this past week were 2-5 BLUE JAYS. Nancy Miller also
reports 4 BLUE JAYS along Four Mile Road. See Idaho DeLorme p.
58, b-1. Four BLUE JAYS have become increasingly regular in the
200 block of North Grant in Moscow. The birds are being seen
about every morning in that neighborhood between 7 and 9 am.
.
Mike Denny had several good birds below McNary Dam, along the
Columbia River in Benton County, Washington and Umatilla County,
Oregon. Mike reports a "TAN-STRIPED" WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, a
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, 2 GOSHAWKS, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS and a single
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK there today, December 16. See Washington
DeLorme p. 29, a-6. If approaching via Interstate 82, take exit 1
on the Oregon side. At the bottom of the ramp, turn east onto US
730 and travel about a mile uphill to the traffic light. Turn
north (left) into the dam area. It's obvious and there are plenty
of signs directing you all the way from the interstate. I'd
recommend you go directly to the visitor center. There is a large
map of the area posted near the entrance that will help you find
the other viewing spots in the wildlife area. If you backtrack
0.25 mile from the visitor center you'll see a sign for West
Park. Turn right onto Third. Follow it for 0.5 mile to the
nature trail and wildlife ponds.

Bob Woodley of Richland found a female Garganey last Thursday (12/15)
and again this morning (12/20). The bird was on the Columbia River
near the Richland Yacht Club which is just downstream from the Shiloh
Rivershore Motel. Mr. Woodley will be out of town this weekend but
offered to talk to anyone interested in seeing the bird before then.
