CBC HIGHLIGHTS
LADNER, BC
12.27.94

The Ladner Christmas Bird Count was held today in a cold driving rain.
Though a species total is unavailable, some highlights from that count were
the first-ever count record *4 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES* at the Tsawwassen
Ferry Terminal Jetty. Also on the Jetty were 3 (possibly 4) SNOW BUNTINGS,
and 1 BLACK OYSTERCATCHER. 2 ROCK SANDPIPERS were seen between ferry berths
1 & 2 in the Ferry Terminal and as many as *200* BLACK TURNSTONES were
along the jetty in several flocks, possibly a record high for a Ladner CBC.

A *EURASIAN RACE GREEN-WINGED TEAL* was located at Ewan Slough in the
Reifel Refuge on Westham Is.; this is the slough visible from the blinds
just E of the intersection of the N & E Dike Trails in the Refuge (another
EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL had been sighted in Farm Slough at Blackie Spit
in Crescent Beach on Friday Dec. 23).

Also at the Reifel Refuge, the HARRIS', WHITE-THROATED, and LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS were in their usual location in the brambles along the S side of
the entrance road near the main gate, and the SWAMP SPARROW was along the N
Dike Trail near the fencepost with blue tag #41. Another LINCOLN'S SPARROW
was at the feeder just N of the Gift Shop, and a third at Brunswick Point
to the S of the Refuge.

Up to 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS were in a standing roost of gulls in a field near
the Towne & Country Inn at the intersection of Hwys 99 & 17, and at least 1
WESTERN GULL was in the Vancouver Landfill at Burns Bog.

Only 1 of the 2 TURKEY VULTURES hanging around the Boundary Bay foreshore
in Beach Grove in Tsawwassen was located for the count, though both have
been reported within the last week.

Up to 4 HUTTON'S VIREO'S were found at several locations in Point Roberts,
Washington. Several LAPLAND LONGSPURS were near the Boundary Bay foreshore
at the S end of 96th St. in S Delta, and 2 EARED GREBES were off the W side
of Point Roberts.

The Prairie Falcon at Brunswick Point was not located on Count Day but was
seen yesterday.
