This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, December 30.

The GARGANEY first reported by Bob Woodley on December 15 in
Richland, Benton County, Washington, was seen December 27 by Mike
Denny. The bird was at the mouth of the Richland Yacht Club which
is just downstream from the Shiloh Rivershore Motel. You may call

John Hirth had a good gull day at the Fighting Creek Landfill
south of Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho on December 27.
John reports 2 immature and 1 adult GLAUCOUS GULLS, 2 first winter
THAYER'S GULLS, and an adult GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL. The landfill
is about 14 miles south of Coeur d'Alene, and the entrance is
between milepost 415 and 416 on the west side of US 95. Stop in
at the office and ask permission to view the birds. Better yet,
call ahead and let them know you are coming. The phone number is
208-769-4402. John had another immature GLAUCOUS GULL on the
pilings in Lake Coeur d'Alene across from North Idaho College
December 27.

Mike Denny reports a second year GLAUCOUS GULL on the poop piles
just north of the Wallula pulp mill along US 12 in Walla Walla
County, on December 27. Also there was a MERLIN. See Washington
DeLorme, p. 40, d-1.

The ICELAND GULL first reported on December 18 by Dan Svingen was
relocated December 28 by Paul Sullivan and Merlene Koliner. The
bird is still on the Clearwater River, but closer to Spalding than
Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho. The bird was loafing on the
gravel bars just across from the Nez Perce visitor center. You
should probably look for the bird between Potlatch Corporation,
near the weigh station on US 12, all the way upstream to at least
Spalding Park. Also at Spalding Park was a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL on
the far east end of the park. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

Mike Denny reports two good birds in northeastern Oregon from
December 30. A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was spotted on Walluwa Lake and
a gray-morph GYRFALCON was seen by Mike just east of Enterprise,
Oregon. To get to the GYR, take the MaHa (sp?) highway east from
Joseph, Oregon to Dobbins Road. Turn left (north) onto Dobbins?
and follow it to Bicentennial Lane. Turn right (east) onto
Bicentennial and follow it to Klages Road. Check all along Klages
for the bird.

Mike Denny saw a SNOWY OWL about 3.5 miles south of Moses Lake,
Grant County, Washington on December 20. Take Washington 17 south
and check between roads 2 SE and 5 SE for owls. See Washington
DeLorme p. 69, d-7.

Dave Holick and myself had a male EURASIAN WIGEON in the Lewiston
/ Clarkston area today, December 30. On December 28 I saw the
bird in the big levee pond on the Lewiston side, but today it was
with a large flock of American Wigeons at Swallows Park south of
Clarkston. The big levee pond had 11 waterfowl species on it
today. Also near the levee pond on the 28th was a PRAIRIE
FALCON. To get to the levee pond, take US 12 west into Lewiston.
After crossing the Clearwater River, stay right past Locomotive
Park. At the first traffic light past the park, turn right onto
the US 12 bypass. Go about a mile to the parking area on the
right just before the railroad bridge. Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.
Swallows Park is south of Clarkston along Washington 129 along the
Snake River. See Washington DeLorme p. 43, a-8.

Mike Denny had a male EURASIAN WIGEON in Leslie Groves Park in
north Richland, Benton County, Washington on December 27. The
park is on the Columbia River.

Warren Hall called in some Spokane area sightings. On December 26
Dennis Dahlke had a BLUE JAY in Minnihaha Park which is near
Frederick and Havana in the Spokane Valley. Washington DeLorme p.
89, c-6. Mike Fulton and Russ Roundy observed a BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER in Riverside State Park, in the burned area just across
from Downriver Drive, on the east side of the road across from
the Spokane Rifle Club. See Washington DeLorme p. 88 & 89, right on
the crease, between b- and c-4 and 5.

Dan Svingen reports 11 PINE GROSBEAKS in Heyburn State Park,
Benewah County, Idaho on December 28. The birds were at the crest
of Indian Cliffs Trail in the burned-over area. The park is
between Plummer and St. Maries along Idaho 5. See Idaho DeLorme
p. 60, c-2.
