We often need something (anything) to kick us out of listing mode and
to allow us to appreciate other living things for what they are. I
feel that's why we cherish the occasional escaped bird.

Four years ago we had a beautiful European Goldfinch here in Wenatchee.
Although we knew it had probably escaped from just down the street, we
still had fun watching it feed with other wild birds. And as an aside,
my wife went into labor within hours of seeing the bird.
