Subject: City Peregrines (fwd)

First of all, thanks to everyone who responded to my request for
info on urban Peregrines. I especially appreciate those who
gave me names of local people/organisations responsible for
Peregrine introduction and those who have given follow-up
information about various individual pairs. I have years of
work ahead just following up on the various resources suggested. (G)

I received information about Peregrines in 55 US and 4 Canadian
cities. Additionally I learned of peregrines in 3 Autralian
cities, 2 in Ireland, and birds in Portugal and the UK that are
nesting within city limits but not on manmade structures.

I am posting separately a list of the locations reported to me.
In most cases I have no independent knowledge of the situations
and am simply reporting what was passed on to me. I will, of
course, blame any errors on someone else (G) Unfortunately, in
many cases I do not know whether the birds arrived in the city
on their own or were introduced there. Also, in a number of
cases I was told that birds were "released". I doubt someone is
opening a cage and letting adult birds fly out so I suspect that
this refers to hacking.

Indiana, among other states, has an active introduction program
going on with birds being hacked in at least 4 cities and
established birds in 2 others. I was told that Ohio has
introduced birds in 5 cities (not named in that message) and was
given the names of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and
Toledo in various posts. But I was also told that Toledo's
birds immigrated from Detroit and that Dayton's came from
Kentucky. So, are there 2 other cities? And where in Kentucky
did the Dayton birds come from?

A surprising number of the birds have their own TV stations -
either at viewing locations in the building or on cable stations
- or viewing areas. The Mayo Clinic broadcasts them to patient
rooms. It appears that these birds have the potential to do a
lot for environmental awareness if we are smart enough to cash
in.

On at least 2 occasions (NYC and SF) the birds have fowled up
plans to replace signs on/behind which they were nesting. In
Santa Cruz, they apparently have delusions of being Koalas, as
they are trying to nest in Eucalyptus trees.

Two sagas continue in Seattle and Cleveland. In Seattle, after
"Victoria" killed herself flying into a window, "Sidney" was
apparently a poor provider and the young birds were removed,
hand fed for a while at the zoo and then returned to their nest.
He apparently learned his lesson and was feeding them, but one
died last week of an infection. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, a
second female (rumored to be from Detroit) tried to move in. At
last report she had left but one recently fledged bird had
knocked itself silly on a window while chasing pigeons and was
returned to its nest via elevator. (This is almost as good as
the OJ trial, definitely better than the soaps - G)

Compiling this has been a lot of fun - Now I'm going to start
tracking down all the background information I received. I will
still appreciate hearing about other locations or any of the
latest gossip on the known ones.
