[26 Jul] DOWNTIME NOTIFICATION: *This* Sunday all the salmon systems
and terminal servers will be down for upgrading and adding new
modems. Downtime starts at 0500, and ends Monday 0500 or
earlier. See halcyon.announce for more information.
**************************************************************************
We'll be adding a bunch of new modems, rearranging things so we can
eliminate or reduce the flakiness that some have experienced with
our modem pool, adding new memory to some machines, and upgrading others
to speed up processors. All in all, we should see notable improvements
as a result; thanks for understanding. And enjoy doing whatever you'll
be doing on Sunday.
Followups are redirected to halcyon.general; if you have questions of
general interest, post a followup. You can also send mail to
support at halcyon.com. PLEASE do not telephone concerning the downtime;
our phones are melting in the heat, and we can get you a quicker and
better answer via e-mail.
We now have a system status line!
Callers to 206 453.8908 will hear a message of approximately thirty
seconds length that reports current system status, and unusual
circumstances regarding our services, and notices of any scheduled
downtime. The status line will *not* include every notice posted in
/etc/motd or halcyon.announce; it is meant to provide immediate and
ephemeral system status notices. The status line message will only
be updated when we note new system problems; it is not meant to
provide a daily "heartbeat" for halcyon and the salmon systems.
Remember; no news is often good news!
If you run into what seems to be a major system failure, call this line to see
if there is indeed a current problem. If you have additional questions, you
may press "1" on your TouchTone keypad to leave a message for technical
support. If you are able to do so, we encourage you to send electronic mail
to
support at halcyon.com
with your question or problem.
When there are serious system problems, we're probably using all available
resources to fix them; your cooperation in not calling our main office number
during that period would be much appreciated. We hope the system status
line will provide you with a way to find out what's happening while we
fix the trouble.
