On Memorial Day weekend, we drove up the forest service roads along
Boulder Creek, N.E. out of Winthrop, and stopped to watch a mother Grouse
with 4 babies cross the road in front of us on Forest Service Road 800. I
got out to try to snap a picture and she ruffled up her neck feathers and
scolded me with high pitched "eeks" and tried to draw me back to the other
side of the road away from the babies she had left under a bush. I felt
so bad for frightening her, I never did snap the picture, but she
certainly left a lasting impression on me.
