Electronic Birding Resources

This list of electronic sources, mailing lists and dialup bulletin boards
which focus on birding and wild bird-related information was compiled
through the help of the subscribers of BIRDCHAT. I have also culled some
citations from Ken Boschert's Electronic Zoo, which is a broader list of
animal-related sites and lists. According to Ken, The most recent version
of The Electronic Zoo can be retrieved via anonymous FTP from
wuarchive.wustl.edu in the subdirectory:
/doc/techreports/wustl.edu/compmed/elec_zoo.x_x
(where x_x refers to the most current version)

Finally, I can't vouch for the continued existence of these sites, nor can
I offer assistance on how to connect to many of them. Enter at your own
risk!

Please let me know of inaccuracies and omissions. I would like to make
this as complete and as correct as possible. There are many other lists
which contain discussions of broader ecological interest, as well as which
focus on other flora and fauna (e.g., entomology). This list only covers
those which focus on wild birds and birding.

MISTNET, Migration Information School Tracking NETwork, joins birders and
school students to report sightings of Northern Oriole, Icturus galbula
galbula, Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina, and Yellow Warbler, Dendroica
petechia, so we can follow the wave of neotropical migrants north in
spring. Coinciding with the North American migration period beginning in
late March and early April, MISTNET peaks in the second week of May with
International Migratory Bird Week. In addition to sightings reported, at
the beginning of each week a "newsletter" is posted with summaries of NO,
WT, and YW sightings to date, and tips for classroom projects and IMB
community celebrations. Let us hear how you are welcoming back the birds.
MISTNET will not be active in June, July, and August, but will resume
activity in the fall with the new school year and planning for next year's
tracking.

THE INTERNATIONAL MARINE ORNITHOLOGISTS' NETWORK

MEMBERSHIP of the network is not restricted in any way. The network has
been initiated to help marine ornithologists exchange information and keep
in contact on a worldwide basis. Examples of its use are requests for and
offers of information, ideas, daa and collected material (such as skeletal
and soft-tissue samples), advertising employment, bursary, fellowship and
volunteer opportunities, notices of meetings, availability of written
materials (e.g. expedition reports, books, proceedings, reprints), ec. All
e-mail messages sent out on the network by members will automatically be
sent to all other members.

The International Marine Ornithologists's Network has been initiated by
John Cooper, Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, University
of Cape Town, Rondebosch 7700, South Africa (jcooper at zoo.uct.ac.za). The
initial announcement of the netwok was sent in August 1993 to 60 marine
ornithologists worldwide who were then on his personal e-mail address list.
