Peter Matthiessen's classic essay on the shorebirds of
North America, "The Wind Birds", has been reprinted as
a paperback by Chapters Publishing of Vermont. This well
researched book is written with the general public in mind
and in the style for which Mr. Matthiessen is famous as a
nature writer. As the book jacket puts it "He conveys the
biological and behavioral intricacies of shorebirds
without dulling their romance and wonder."

In Mr. Matthiessen's own words: "The restlessness of
shorebirds, their kinship with distance and swift seasons,
the wistful signal of their voices down the long
coastlines of the world make them, for me, the most affecting
