This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington bird
hotline for Friday, March 11 (1994). If you wish to bypass this
recording and simply leave a message for me, including the date of your
sighting and the DeLorme atlas page number if you have it, push the star
button on your telephone now.

This hotline, sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday
sometime before the dinner hour. Bird trips are announced at the end of
the recording.

Birds of note reported this week include BRANT, GYRFALCON, SNOWY OWL,
SWAMP SPARROW, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, SNOW BUNTING, WHITE WINGED
CROSSBILL, LONG-EARED OWL, AND ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

The single BRANT was still being seen in Lewiston through last Saturday.
Dave Holick reported seeing it mid morning on the 5th. If you go looking
for this bird, don't go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Mid day is best. As you enter Lewiston via US 95 and US 12, turn right
(west) at the first traffic light you come to. This is 3rd Avenue North,
and is right before the bridge. Travel about 0.6 mile and the grain
terminal will be on your left. For the next 0.2 miles, keep looking for
the geese. The BRANT is there, but often lurks behind the much larger
CANADA GEESE and dirt piles. Please call the hotline if you see this
bird during the week.

Andy Stepniewski reports two SNOW GEESE at the Reardon ponds just west of
Reardon, Washinton. He saw these on March 6, just before seeing a
GYRFALCON north-northeast of Davenport near the intersection of Level
Road and Ziementz Road. See Washington DeLorme p. 87, C as in chickadee,
8. In the same vicinity was a SNOWY OWL. It was along the Ziementz Road
in Township 26 North, Range 38 East, Section 30.

Stacy Peterson reports seeing two SWAMP SPARROWS on March 4 at the Fort
Walla Walla Natural Area, which is just north of the Fort Walla Walla
Museum. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, D as in dowitcher, 6. The birds
were in the thickets just south of the old barn. Larry McCloskey saw one
the next day. If you need better directions, call Stacy at (509)
527-2314.

Dave Holick reports dueting NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS near the base of
Moscow Mountain, about 8 miles northeast of Moscow. The birds have been
calling for about a week. If you'd like to hear them, call Dave at (208)
882-5556.

Andy Stepniewski had several good sightings from the Mt. Spokane area on
March 6. Between the summit and the sno-park parking lot, Andy observed
BLUE GROUSE, HORNED LARKS, 6 SNOW BUNTINGS, a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS,
and 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the parking lot. Mt. Spokane is about
30 miles northeast of Spokane. See Washington DeLorme p. 89, A-8. Andy
also reports hooting LONG-EARED OWLS in Northrup Canyon near Grand
Coulee, Washington.

Recent arrivals for this week include an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in with a
flock of "YELLOW-RUMPS" at the Ft. Walla Walla Natural Area. Stacy
Peterson saw this bird on March 5.

The Canyon Birders have some trips planned for March. On the 12th, they
plan to bird the Tucannon Wildlife Game Range. Meet at Swallows Park
near the boat launch at 8 a.m. On March 18 & 19 they plan to bird the
Umatilla Wildlife Refuge. It's their annual trip to see courting
Long-billed Curlew's. If you can't make it on the 18th, join them on the
19th! Looking ahead, they have a trip planned for April 2. They will be
birding along the Grande Rhonde River to Troy, Oregon. It's a good trip
to see deer, elk, mountain sheep and of course, birds. Departure is from
Swallows Park boat launch at 8 a.m. If you have any questions, or are
interested in the Umatilla trip, please call Winnie Hepburn at (208)
843-5347.

Good birding!
