For the last 9 to 10 years I have been keeping casual notes on species
seen at Edmonds beach pretty much on a monthly basis. My notes indicate
that I would occasionally see a few Barrows Goldeneye each winter, but not
every month. The past few years indicate that I have seen them most months
during the winter (Nov. through March), and this winter I can't remember
not seeing them on every visit (3 to 4 times per month). I have not
recorded actual numbers, but 2 to 6 are typical counts for maybe an hour
or less observation time. The other bit of interest is that the numbers of
all other wintering ducks at Edmonds has been low this winter and last,
although the species are all represented.

At any rate, despite its rather off-putting name, Ronald Bog is a delight
on the morning and evening commute, affording close views of a surprising
variety of home bodies and migrants.

Remember, Glenda, that in Russian, 'Bog' means 'God.' Not so off-putting.

But who is Ronald?
