This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington bird
hotline for Friday, March 18, 1994. If you wish to bypass this recording

This hotline, sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday
sometime before the dinner hour. Bird trips are announced at the end of
the recording.

Birds of note reported this week include YELLOW-BILLED LOON, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, EURASIAN WIGEON, HARRIS' SPARROW, RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, AND NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS.

Dan, loon man, Svingen reports an immature YELLOW-BILLED LOON in
association with an adult, winter-plummaged COMMON LOON at the Harrison
Marina, in Harrison, Idaho, on March 13. The birds were seen from the
marina. Also near Harrison, Dan reports 7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at
the Coeur d'Alene Wildlife Management Area just north of Harrison. The
WMA can be reached by driving north out of Harrison, crossing the iron
truss bridge, and turning right on the next road. This road makes a loop
around the WMA. An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE is still here as well. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 60, C, as in chickadee, 1.

Jeff Wisman reports a male EURASIAN WIGEON on the Seltese Flats east of
Spokane in the Spokane Valley. Jeff saw the bird on March 12 with an
assortment of other waterfowl. This area is west of Liberty Lake and
northwest of Mica Peak and can be reached by heading east from Spokane on
Interstate 90. Turn south off I-90 onto Barker Road. Follow it about 2
or 3 miles to 32 Avenue. Turn east and follow 32 Avenue to Seltese Lake
Road. This road circles a former lake bed. Look for the WIGEON on the
main canal. See Washington DeLorme p. 89, between letters C, as in
chickadee, and D, as in dowitcher, 7 and 8.

On March 14, Anthony Floyd reports a lone RED-BREASTED MERGANSER below
the McNary Dam at McNary Wildlife Area at Umatilla, Oregon, and a single
HARRIS' SPARROW with WHITE-CROWNS and GOLDEN-CROWNS around the
containment ponds near the dam. See WashingtonDeLorme p. 29, A-6.

Dave Holick is still hearing NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS near the base of
Moscow Mountain, about 8 miles northeast of Moscow. The birds have been
calling for about three weeks. If you'd like to hear them, call Dave at

The Canyon Birders have one more trip planned for March. On March 18 &
19 they plan to bird the Umatilla Wildlife Refuge. It's their annual
trip to see courting Long-billed Curlew's. If you can't make it on the
18th, join them on the 19th! Looking ahead, they have a trip planned for
April 2. They will be birding along the Grande Rhonde River to Troy,
Oregon. It's a good trip to see deer, elk, mountain sheep and of course,
birds. Departure is from Swallows Park boat launch at 8 a.m. If you

On March 25, I will not be able to update the hotline until late in the
evening. Those of you who religiously call after dinner on Friday may
wish to postpone calling until very late that evening, or early Saturday
