Greetings,

I found Dennis Paulson's directive for all TUFTED DUCK spotters to be
sure of the "pureness" of their ducks to be very useful and a bit
disheartening at the same time. It makes perfect sense, and I really
appreciate his insight, but it causes a bit of discomfort to think that a
CODE 3 bird from Europe might not be countable! Thanks, Dennis!!

On a more serious note, I must provide certain information regarding the
TUFTED DUCK seen at Wallula Junction on the Columbia River (March 20 to
present). I had the opportunity to sit on the shore with my scope and
observe it for about one hour at leisure (March 21). I saw it doing
nearly everything except flying! A brisk wind was blowing, the day was
alternately sunny and overcast. These are my impressions/observations of
the duck.

The bird had a definate dark back, in distinct contrast with the SCAUP it
was associating with. I did not notice any vermiculations on the back,
but the range may not have been close enough, either. Brilliant white
sides made the bird stand out, too. It appeared slightly smaller, more
dainty than GREATER SCAUP. A definate tuft (cowlick??) was visible toward
the back of its head (about 1:30 o'clock, in position to straight up on a
bird facing sideways). This tuft was not as long as seen in typical
pictures, and didn't even appear to curve - it sort of just stuck up an
inch or two. Even in the wind with the bird facing different directions,
and when the bird ducked through the waves on the river, I didn't see a
long tuft flapping around.

That may be enough, but here's my big question - I observed a
definate green sheen on most of the head of this bird in certain light.
The area just around the eye appeared darker and lacked the green sheen,
which of course was not visible all the time. Is this indicative of a
hybrid with GREATER SCAUP?

A number of other people have observed the duck as well, and I would
like to get their opinions, too, but until then I solicit any information
regarding TUFTED DUCK/SCAUP hybrids from readers here. What do you
think?

And, Dennis, I do appreciate your postings! Thanks!

Sincerely,

Stacy Peterson
