This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington bird
hotline for Friday, March 25 (1994). If you wish to bypass this

Birds of note reported this week include TUFTED DUCK, OLDSQUAW,
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, THAYER'S GULL, GLAUCAUS GULL, and OSPREY.

Philip Bartley and Tony Gregor report a male, adult)plummaged TUFTED DUCK
from the Columbia River near Wallula Junction, Washington. At the same
location was a female, winter)plummaged OLDSQUAW. Both birds were seen
on March 20 and several folks also called in these birds, with the last
sighting from Tuesday, March 22.

["TUDU" present until at least Wed, Mar 23, OLDSQ present today, Tue, Mar
29 - SP].

There is some argument over the purity of the TUFTED DUCK, with some
folks asserting it's a TUFTED DUCK-SCAUP HYBRID. The TUFTED DUCK has
been photographed. I'd suggest you make the trip and see it for
yourself. Both birds were seen near the Walla Walla Grain Growers' grain
terminal. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, d as in duck, 1. To find the
OLDSQUAW and TUFTED DUCK, take the first right turn off US 730 just west
of the US 12 - US 730 junction at Wallula. Follow it and turn left
between the yellow rail car and the fence, crossing the railroad tracks
onto a poor condition dirt road. Follow the fence around until you have
a clear view of the river. Please let the hotline know if the birds are
still around.

Russ Roundy saw WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Mt. Spokane on March 23. They
were seen at the first parking lot for down hill skiing as well as at the
snow)park. Mt. Spokane is about 30 miles northeast of Spokane. See
Washington DeLorme p. 89, a)8.

Dan Svingen reports a first winter THAYER'S GULL and 2 probably second
winter GLAUCAUS GULLS the Harrison Marina, in Harrison, Idaho, on March
19. Also in the marina was an OSPREY. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c as in
chickadee 1.

The Canyon Birders have a trip planned for April 2. They will be birding
along the Grande Rhonde River to Troy, Oregon. It's a good trip to see
deer, elk, mountain sheep and of course, birds. Departure is from
Swallows Park boat launch at 8 a.m. If you have any questions, or are
