This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington
bird hotline for Friday, May 6, 1994. If you wish to bypass this

Birds of note reported this week include ROSS' GOOSE, LEWIS'
WOODPECKER,
CASPIAN, and FORSTER'S TERNS.

Mike and MerryLynn Denny saw 4 ROSS' GEESE on April 30 across the
Snake River from Central Ferry State Park, about 25 miles southeast of
LaCrosse, Washington. The birds were also seen the next day by Mike
Willison and Andy Stepniewski. The birds were actually in Garfield
County and this is thought to be a first. If anyone has any earlier
sightings of this species in Garfield County, please give Mike a call at

To get to the birds, take Lower Deadman Road off Highway 127.
Follow it to the end of the impoundment and check the marsh areas. See
Washington DeLorme page 56, D as in dowitcher 2.

Mike and MerryLynn also saw a GOLDEN EAGLE up New York Gulch Road
and WILD TURKEYS along the Tucannon River in the Pomeroy-Tucannon area.

April 30 must have been the day for ROSS' GEESE. My wife Debbie and
I observed a flock of 8 ROSS' at Mann Lake just east of Lewiston. There
were 3 SNOW GEESE in with them. They were very approachable, 20-30 feet,
and allowed great views. Any white geese now seen in the region should
obviously be checked closely for ROSS'.

To get to Mann Lake, enter Lewiston via US 95 from the north, cross
the Clearwater River and follow the sign to East Lewiston. Turn left
onto Main Street and follow it until it "T's," turning right onto Lindsay
Creek Road. Follow Lindsay Creek Road for about 5 miles until it ends at
Grelle Street. Turn left onto Grelle and follow it to the 20 mph turn.
Go 0.3 mile more and turn left. Immediately you'll see a sign for Mann
Lake. Go straight for 1.3 miles to the parking lot. See Idaho DeLorme
page 54, A1.

John Roberson saw a LEWIS' WOODPECKER about 6 miles north of Pullman
on May 4. This species is unusual on the Palouse. John reports it was
near the intersection of the Old Albion Road and Four Mile Road. See
Washington DeLorme page 57, B as in buteo, 7.

On May 6, John also reports 5 CASPIAN TERNS and a single FORSTER'S
TERN at the south end of Rock Lake in northwest Whitman County,
Washington. The birds can be seen from the south parking lot if you have
a scope. See Washington DeLorme page 72, halfway between C as in
chickadee and D as in dowitcher, 3.

Upcoming bird trips -- May 14, Palouse Audubon at Kamiak Butte.

May 15, Canyon Birders at Waha and Craig Mountain Area. Meet at
Idaho Fish and Game office on Warner Avenue in Lewiston at 7:30 a.m.

May 21, Canyon Birders at Brown's Gulch and Palouse Falls. Meet at
Swallows Park in Clarkston at 7:30 a.m. All day trip. Call Louise
LaVoie for information at (509) 758-2832.

May 22, Palouse Audubon meets at Dissmore parking lot at 1:00 p.m.
for a walk looking at birds and flowers.

Palouse Audubon has a presentation coming up. On May 18, Jim
Pissot, Director of the Washington State Audubon Office will talk about
the decline of Neotropic migrants and the international program to stop
the decline. His presentation is at the Moscow Community Center on the
corner of Third and Washington Streets and starts at 7:30 p.m.
