A gorgeous male has been singing his head off this morning in my back
yard! I first heard him call shortly before 9:00 a.m. until around 9:45.
I didn't see or hear him between then and 10:15 when I needed to rush to
work. I watched him from my deck, but he was not easy to see as he
mostly stayed near the top of a rather large Bigleaf Maple. Black hood
clearly visible, as were yellow body and white tail spots. I played a
few taped songs (from my tape deck inside the house) and he responded
with a perfect imitation of call #2 on Borror's Eastern Warblers. Wow!

Directions if anyone wants to try for it, I don't know if he is still
there, but here goes: Aloha is west of Portland, between Beaverton and
Hillsboro. From the Sunset Highway (hwy 26), 9 miles west of downtown
Portland, take the 185th Ave exit south. Go past TV highway and past
Farmington Avenue and up the rather steep hill. (Maybe a total of 6 or 7
miles from hwy 26.) This is Cooper Mountain. Halfway up the hill, turn
left on Rigert Rd, left again on 184th Ave. Continue back down the hill
on 184th for a block and a half. My house is at 7800, a dark brown house
on the right hand side. There is a wooded public "green area" on the
side and behind the house. In the middle of this area is the Maple where
the Warbler was. If you don't have any luck there, you might try the
park along Bany Rd across from Erol Hassel school a few blocks down the
mountain. If you try for it, please let me know how you do. My phone
numbers are W:690-4214 H:649-6328.

I don't have my "Rare Birds of Oregon" handy, but this is about the 5th
record for the state, and I'm fairly sure the first for western Oregon.

(Sorry if this isn't entirely coherent -- I'm really jazzed, as you can
probably tell!)
