Hi,

Just a quick report from the SAS birdathon big day/owl prowl I led
Saturday-Sunday May 21-22 (10 PM to 10 PM): managed to see and/or hear 8
species, a personal best (but short of Andy Stepniewski's & Paul Cozen's
10 of the week before in Yakima county -- 13 is theoretically possible).
Bagged a Barn Owl over the windmill nest site at Marymoor Park, then an
adult Barred and 2-3 (apparent) juveniles in St. Edwards State Park north
of Juanita (we heard the thin whining whistle calls in response to my
crude Barred imitation, saw the adult finally, but heard no calls).
Missed Western Screech at Carnation but picked it up Sunday evening at
dusk at Seward Park to avoid an embarrassing miss. Heard three Flams,
one Saw-whet, and a Great Horned calling at and just west of Blewett Pass,
missed Spotted near Liberty, then closed with 4 Burrowing Owls and the
family group of Long-eareds just east of the Dodson Rd X Frenchman Hills
Rd. jct. If we hadn't had to work so hard to get the early owls we would
have had more time to pin down others. Does anyone know where
Short-eared Owls breed in the state. Andy & Paul missed Short-eared also.
