When we lived in Minnesota, we used to take the children to a neighborhood
park where, at any time of any day, there were always people walking or
running their dogs; there were dogs there so consistently and often that
we named the park "Dog Park." A pair of killdeers nested right in the
middle of the park. In spite of the high dog (and human) population, they
successfully fledged three chicks that spring. We have found other
killdeer nests in what would seem to be unsafe places, such as the
gravelly edge of a bank parking lot, and a rocky field outside a noisy and
busy elementary school.
