There are often Black Oystercatchers around the pass between Indian Island
and the mainland (Hadlock). Most times that I have been there, even in the
summer, they can be found with little searching. The lower end of the pass
can be viewed from Oak Bay Park, while the mid-lower reaches can be seen from a
small county park just across the bridge on Indian Island. I imagine that
these birds may breed along the Indian Island shore, taking advantage of the
fact that this island is a military armory and mostly closed to the public.
They can also be seen on the spit at the north end of the island, which can
be viewed from the sand-spit on the west side of Fort Flagler Park, but be
forwarned that this is a long-distance view even with a scope.
