This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington
Bird Hotline for Friday, November 11, 1994.

Three SWAMP SPARROWS have been reported in the St. Maries, Idaho
area. On November 5 Dan Svingen reported one from the Coeur
d'Alene Wildlife Management Area (CdA WMA) near the Anderson Lake
bridge. I found that bird this afternoon in the same locale. I
also found two more SWAMP SPARROWS along Plummer Creek on the
southwest end of Lake Chatcolet. To get to the CdA WMA, head
north from Harrison on Idaho 97. Just after you cross the CdA
River via the iron truss bridge, turn right onto Blue Lake Road.
Anderson Lake bridge is along the right side of Blue Lake Road.
Look for the bird in the scrubby, brushy areas. To get to the
other sparrows, take Idaho 5 from Plummer to St. Maries. At mile
post 6.3, turn north, following the signs for Lake Chatcolet. Go
0.8 miles to the bridge over Plummer Creek. There's a pullout
right before the bridge on the right side of the road. One Swamp
Sparrow was calling from the brush between the pullout and the
creek. The other was farther out in the cattails. See Idaho
DeLorme p. 60, c-1 and -2. Dan also saw the following at the
CdA WMA on November 6: NORTHERN SHRIKE, about 100 GADWALL, a
juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, and 5 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Also at Lake Chatcolet were EARED GREBE, female RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, and a few female GREATER SCAUP.
.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was reported by Dan Svingen on November 5
along Hell's Gulch Flat Road near St. Maries, Idaho. To get to
Hell's Gulch Flat, take Idaho 3 north from St. Maries to mile post
96.5. Turn right onto Hell's Gulch Flat. Also along the flat
were BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c-1 and -2.
.
John and Marty Hirth saw 2 DUNLIN, 9 ROSS' GEESE, 3 SNOW GEESE,
and 3 TUNDRA SWANS at Mann Lake just east of Lewiston, Idaho on
November 6. The next day I found only 1 Ross' Goose, but about a
dozen more Snow Geese and one more Tundra Swan. To get to Mann
Lake when entering Lewiston from the north, take the US 12 exit at
the bottom of the grade, cross the Clearwater River and take the
first left toward East Lewiston. At the blinking light, turn
right onto Lindsay Creek Road. Follow it until it terminates at
Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle. After Grelle makes a 20
m.p.h. right turn, turn left. Immediately you'll see a sign for
Mann Lake. Continue straight, through the dead end, to the lake.
See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1. The Hirth's also saw a late female
LAZULI BUNTING just south of Moscow on November 6.
.
Mike Denny also reports a ROSS' GOOSE from northwestern Walla
Walla County. The bird was along Hanson Loop Road, just south of
McNary NWR and near Hood Park. Hood Park is about 2.5 miles south
of the bridge over the Snake River along US 12. Mike also saw a
blue morph SNOW GOOSE just east of Hood Park, about 1/8 mile east
of US 12 along Washington 124. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1.
.
.
Winnie Hepburn viewed a MUTE SWAN at Chief Timothy State Park just
west of Clarkston, Washington on November 5. The bird was seen
near the wildlife area and Silcott Island. Take US 12 west from
Clarkston about 6 miles to the park. See Washington DeLorme p.
43, a-7.
.
Today, Dan Svingen and I saw 4 or 5 first winter THAYER'S GULLS at
the Fighting Creek Landfill south of Coeur d'Alene. The entrance
to the landfill is at mile post 415.4 along US 95, about 14 miles
south of Coeur d'Alene. Please stop at the office and ask
permission to enter. Better yet, call ahead. The number is
208-769-4402.
.
A RED-TAILED "HARLAN'S" HAWK was reported by Dan Svingen on the
Harrison Flats between St. Maries and Harrison. Follow Idaho 97
and watch the power poles.
.
BLUE JAYS are still around. The Hirth's report 2 have been coming
to their feeder in Viola, Idaho for the past month and 4 were seen
November 6 at a feeder in the 200 block of North Grant in Moscow.
Mike Denny reports 2 at the intersection of North College Avenue
and Walluwa Avenue in College Place, Washington.
.
Finally, if you need a BONAPARTE'S GULL, there's about 100 of them
on the St. Maries sewage ponds. To get to them, take Idaho 3
north from St. Maries.
.
Good birding!
