{Re: Ross' Gull
A number of birders observed the Ross'Gull all day today (28 Nov). It truly
is an exquisite bird and is readily seen from the "skydeck" overlooking the
fish erector set scheme at McNary Dam. "Animal control" folks are busily
setting off firecrackers to scare away all the fish-eating birds, so you
might have to wait awhile for them, including the Ross' Gull, to reappear.
It seems to be most attracted to the Oregon side where the fish are being
spewed out of an elaborate piping system. A Bald Eagle flushed it while I
observed gulls downstream from the dam, forcing them into Washington. Also,
there was a Pacific Loon and Mew Gull there 27 Nov, and an Oldsquaw today,
all rare inland. My hats off to Phil Bartley for this wonderful discovery.
Also to the BPA and Army Corps for setting up this immense fish-munching
system on the Columbia, guaranteed to attract vagrant gulls.
