Les Chibana described well the recordings of Ken Hall and Peter Ward;
however, they are not California recordings. The excellent series of
tapes (and CD's ) were recorded in B.C, Washington, Oregon and maybe a
little in Idaho I would highly recommend them to anybody particularly
those in the Pacific Northwest or those planning to visit the
Northwest.

Hall and Ward live in Vancouver B.C. These recordings are fantastic
for their area (unfortunately the people in charge of the BBS again
went with eastern recordings to produce area tapes for participants
completely ignoring the excellent work by this pair in BC.)

Their supplier is the pits and the recordings are very hard to
obtain. Bird Song City may have them. A few years ago they
were carried nationally in Canada by the Nature Canada Bookstore but
unfortunately that died. Next time I phone the ABA I will mention
the set to them again. The pair have been doing landscape recording
lately. They have new equipment with very expensive directional
mikes now and have produced at least one "landscape" CD which
is very nice.

California needs a multiple CD set of its own. There is the Tom
Saunders tape I referred to earlier but I do not know where you
can get it now. Maybe somebody in the Bay Area could post a source.
It used to be carried by the ABA a couple years ago. Just got my
catalog from the LA Audubon Society and it doesn't have it in it.

Californians need to start recording and not just in the quiet
places like Yuba Pass. The world is not getting quieter. You
may have background noise from cars, planes, etc but at least you
will have the bird. It will not be a recording for the Solitudes
Collection but can be a valuable record and learning tool for
those wanting to learn the songs and visitors to your state with
limited time to spend.
