Well, I might have guessed that my comments would have generated some
"doubts" about whether the birds in question really were Rustys. Fair
enough, doubters sharpen the skills of the non-pros, and I appreciate it.
Thanks for responding, Dennis and Gene.
I have reviewed the notes I wrote up at the time on these
"dark-eyed" Rusty Blackbirds, and remain convinced of the ID. These
weren't single observer sightings; both were confirmed independently by
several other competent birders. One of these birds was observed for
several days with a flock of mixed blackbirds (at the WWC Farm) including
first year male Redwings and Brewer's. Those of us involved believe
we're past the stage of misidentifying Redwings, in any plumage--even
when the epaulet is obscured, but the caution is well taken.
Dennis, you've said it before: carry a camera and take a photo! I
promise if I ever see another, I'll try to get an eyeball picture!
