Hello birders, this is the Bird Brain, voice of Seattle
Audubon's Bird Sightings Hotline for FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14,
1994, at 8 AM.

To skip the details and just leave a message punch 5 and
wait for the tone.

For sick or injured birds call the Wild Bird Clinic at 941-
2174 [or PAWS at 743-3845 or 743-1884].

An immature LITTLE GULL was at the Everett STP Oct. 8 but
could not be found on the 10th. Three FRANKLIN'S GULLS were
still there Oct. 8.

PARASITIC JAEGERS were spotted migrating off the Edmonds
fishing pier Oct. 6-11 in the company of COMMON TERNS. An
early ANCIENT MURRELET was nearby at the Mukilteo State Park
Oct. 11. A few PECTORAL SANDPIPERS continue to be seen at
the Edmonds Marsh behind the ferry landing.

A BLUE JAY was reported in Discovery Park at the overlook
northwest of the south meadow Oct. 5 and another was seen at
the foot of Schmitz Park in West Seattle Oct. 8. Other BLUE
JAYS have invaded Spokane for what could be a banner year
for this rare straggler from east of the Rockies.

A dark PARASITIC JAEGER was off Alki Pt. Oct. 12 and a
NORTHERN HARRIER was seen migrating north (yes, north) right
up the middle of Puget Sound off Alki that same day. Three
species of SCOTERS and HARLEQUIN DUCKS are off Alki Pt. A
LEACH'S STORM PETREL reported one mile off Lincoln Park in
West Seattle Oct. 8. This would be a most unusual record.
Storms occasionally drive these pelagic species to inside
waters.

PEREGRINES were noted on the power towers on the I-5 Ship
Canal Bridge and at the grain terminals off Myrtle Edwards
Park. One visited the offices of Johnston & Culberson on
the 35th floor of 2 Union Square Bldg. Oct. 6.

Recent Montlake Fill sightings include PECTORAL and a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, a GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, AMERICAN PIPITS, COOPER'S HAWKS, a MOURNING
DOVE, a SHORT-EARED OWL, and the first NORTHERN SHRIKE of
the winter, an juvenile seen Oct. 7-10. Six WOOD DUCKS were
on nearby Union Bay through Oct. 9.

Five TURKEY VULTURES were migrating over Queen Anne hill
Oct. 8, the tail end of the fall movement south.

A FRANKLIN'S GULL was at the mouth of the Cedar River in
Renton Oct. 3 but could not be found there Oct. 9, though a
REDHEAD was present on the latter date.

Early EURASIAN WIGEONS were noted on Bainbridge Is. Oct. 12.

At the Kent ponds Oct. 12 there was a NORTHERN SHRIKE and
MERLIN, but the GREAT EGRET was not seen. A WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW was found at Five Mile Lake in Federal Way Oct. 8.

On San Juan Island Oct. 9 there were 20 LAPLAND LONGSPURS
and 6 GOLDEN PLOVERS, including both PACIFIC and AMERICANs.

For SAS field trips, or for information on conservation and
education issues please call the office at 523-4483 during
office hours, 10-4 Monday through Friday and 10-2 Saturday.

That's all for now. If you have news to report, wait for
the tone, then give your name, phone number, and the
details. Thanks and good birding.
