Hello birders, this is the Bird Brain, voice of Seattle
Audubon's Bird Sightings Hotline for SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22,
1994, at 8 AM.

An EMPEROR GOOSE was spotted Oct. 20 in a flock of CANADA'S
in a buffalo pasture s of Everett near Silver Lake at the
corner of 134th and 35th Ave SE. A single SNOW GOOSE as
well as CACKLING GEESE were in the same flock. Take the
128th St. exit off I-5 and head east past the Bothel-Everett
highway to 35th.

We have had no further reports of the BLUE JAYs seen in
Discovery Park and Schmitz Park in Seattle Oct. 7-8. Other
BLUE JAYS were reported in the town of Soap Lake in Grant
County and have invaded Spokane.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS put on a good showing, with one at
Five-Mile Lake Park in Federal Way Oct. 8, another in Fife
Oct. 9 & 10, two at the Kent Ponds last week, and yet
another on Bainbridge Is. Oct. 20.

An adult POMARINE JAEGER, rare in Puget Sound, was seen from
the Bainbridge I. ferry Oct. 16. A dark PARASITIC JAEGER
was off Alki Pt. Oct. 12 and a NORTHERN HARRIER was seen
migrating north (yes, north) right up the middle of Puget
Sound off Alki that same day. Three species of SCOTERS and
HARLEQUIN DUCKS are off Alki Pt. A stray ROCK WREN was at
Alki Pt. lighthouse Oct. 18.

PEREGRINES have been seen regularly on the power towers
beside the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge and at the grain terminals
off Myrtle Edwards Park. MERLINS have also been noted
recently on Capitol Hill, in the University District, and on
Bainbridge Is.

A EURASIAN WIGEON and a pair of CANVASBACKS were on Green
Lake in Seattle Oct. 17.

Eighteen TURKEY VULTURES migrating over Magnolia district
just east of Discovery Park Oct. 14 are the tail end of the
fall movement south.

An early ANCIENT MURRELET was nearby at the Mukilteo State
Park Oct. 11. Nearby at the Edmonds Union Oil Marsh there
were 22 COMMON SNIPES and a VIRGINIA RAIL Oct. 17. Three
immature FRANKLIN'S GULLS remained at the Everett STP. Also
present were a male REDHEAD, a PEREGRINE and a MERLIN, and
12 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.

At the Kent ponds Oct. 15 there were 4 TUNDRA SWANS, a
hybrid male WIGEON, 59 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and one DUNLIN, as well
as a late group of VIOLET-GREEN and BARN SWALLOWS and a
flock of 32 AMERICAN PIPITS.

A SPOTTED OWL was reported along the Spruce RR trail near
Lake Crescent west of Port Angeles, while a PALM WARBLER, a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and several BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and
ANCIENT MURRELETS were noted at Neah Bay Oct. 15.

A flock of 60 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS was at Bowerman Basin in
Hoquiam as the tide was falling Oct. 14.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen Oct. 18 near Vancouver Lake
Park just north of Portland, Oregon, near the end of the
spur road there. For detailed directions contact Bob Ramsey

A TUFTED DUCK was spotted in a closed area of the Columbia
National Wildlife Refuge near Othello Oct. 17. TRUMPETER
SWANS with green neck bands were noted there also. If you
see neck banded swans (green on TRUMPETERS, blue on TUNDRAS)
please report details, including code numbers if readable,
to Randy Hill at 509-488-2668.

Ninety-nine GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES were foraging along
the crest of Saddle Mtn. southwest of Othello Oct. 17. This
summit is accessible from SR 24 by turning north 0.1 mile
east of MP60.
