Though not widely known, Boundary Bay, near Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada, is one of North America's greatest migrational staging areas for
shorebirds and waterfowl, and the lands around it are Canada's best
wintering raptor habitat.

Unlike every similar site on the continent, it is legally and practically
*unprotected* and under both imminent *and* long-term threat of destruction
by development by ill-advised government/commercial construction plans and
current non-nature-related exploitation.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, there will be a one-day conference on ways to protect
this priceless area.

The Forum on Boundary Bay will be held to celebrate the
globally-significant Boundary Bay ecosystem and seek common solutions to
protect this valuable site.

Speakers include Dr. Jamie Smith, who will talk on the Bay as a globally
-important staging area; Dr. Otto Langer, who will talk on aspects of
salmonid and other fisheries and their importance; Gary Runka will discuss
farming on the Pacific Flyway; Dr. Adrienne Peacock will be the lunchtime
speaker, on sustainability of resources of the Bay.

There will be a panel discussion during the morning session.

After a lunch provided by a local firm, BC Produce, there will be speakers
proposing various intiatives regarding protection of Boundary Bay. Included
are representatives of the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust, the Delta
Environmental Advisory Committee, the Delta Rural Land-use Study, the
Public Advisory Committee; also, there will be discussion of establishing a
Biosphere Reserve in the area, and Dr. Fred Cooke will talk about research
initiatives in Boundary Bay.

The cost of this conference is c$20 (us$15). If you're interesting in
attending, please phone or fax Anne Murray at (604) 943-6980.

I know it's short notice, but I just found out about it tonight. Hope you
can attend and help save Boundary Bay: the wildlife needs all the help it
can get here.
