Subject: More birding in Seattle

I've been an active member of the Master Plan Advisory Committee for
North Seattle Community College. It has some reverting green space, very
similar to Montlake, and some wetlands and a pond, which a group of us
are working (with the college) to protect, preserve, enhance. It
resides very close to the freeway (noisy), but it has some off and on good
birding.

Since 1989, I have personally seen (sometimes with help) 94 species.
The total list to date is 95 species (Ken Jacobsen got no. 95,
Northern shrike).

You may never see a lot of birds (or you may), but sometimes you see a
lot of
species. During late fall, winter it's possible to walk through and
see 30-35 species in under an hour.

We need people to get involved with helping to protect this reverting
green space, and to help identify more birds, plants, animals, etc.

Species seen last week: Wood ducks (6-10, late afternoon on the surge
pond best time), hooded mergansers 6-10, green wing teals (variable, more
as winter progresses), gadwalls, mallards, coots, piedbill grebe,
green backed heron, great blue heron, redw blackbird, sharpshinned hawk
with meal, red tailed hawk, bc chickadees, house sparrow, golden crowned
sparrow, fox sparrow, white crowned sparrow, golden crowned kinglet,
rufous sided towhee, robin, kingfisher (we think we had a breeding
pair in the area last year, this year only one so far), am. goldfinch,
and more.

I would be pleased to send you a list of sightings:
