I think it may be more of a problem separating female Garganey from
female Blue-winged Teal. I went round on a female BWT at the Kent ponds
for nearly an hour (without references in hand) and when I got around to
looking at the Birding articles ruled out female Garganey. Female BWT
can show a weak ear patch that gives the suggestion of a double-lined
face but has whitish lores and, of course, no white-bordered green
speculum in flight. Garganey wings seem to be almost like a combination
of GWT and BWT patterns, plus the pale primaries.
