Responding to Burt Guttman's query about a mystery shorebird on Montlake fill:

If you thought it might be a Western, I assume it wasn't very large. Could
it have been a Least? Adult Leasts molt into their basic (winter) plumage
in early September and might look something like the bird you described.
That pond is also good Least habitat. I think it's too early for juvenile
Leasts to be molting into first-basic (first-winter) plumage, but your bird
also matches that description. With yellowish legs, I don't know what else
it could be. Note that what you called "primaries" were probably tertials,
overlying the primaries.
