Subject: Electronic Birding Resources (LONG) (fwd)
Date: Sep 7 16:18:49 1994
From: Rob Scott - rs18 at CORNELL.EDU

from Rob Scott, Ithaca, NY USA RS18 at Cornell.edu

Hey, folks, thought I should send this to you first. This is a revision of
the EBR, with more info, hopefully better format, etc. Please feel free
to delete now if you're not interested; the rest of you please tell me of
any additions/corrections that should be made.

Electronic Birding Resources
Second Revision
September 7, 1994

This list of electronic sources, mailing lists and dialup bulletin boards
which focus on birding and wild bird-related information was compiled
through the help of many people on The Net. Some citations have been
culled from Ken Boschert's Electronic Zoo, which is a broad list of
animal-related sites and lists. According to Ken, The most recent version
of The Electronic Zoo can be retrieved via anonymous FTP from
wuarchive.wustl.edu in the subdirectory:
/doc/techreports/wustl.edu/compmed/elec_zoo.x_x
(where x_x refers to the most current version)

Finally, I can't vouch for the continued existence of these resources, nor
can I offer assistance on how to connect to many of them. Enter at your
own risk!

Please let me know of inaccuracies and omissions. I would like to make
this list of birding resources as complete and as correct as possible.
There are many other sites which contain discussions of broader ecological
interest, as well as which focus on other flora and fauna (e.g.,
entomology). This list only covers those which focus on wild birds and
birding.

Good Birding!

MISTNET, Migration Information School Tracking NETwork, joins birders and
school students to report sightings of Northern Oriole, Icturus galbula
galbula, Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina, and Yellow Warbler, Dendroica
petechia, so we can follow the wave of neotropical migrants north in
spring. Coinciding with the North American migration period beginning in
late March and early April, MISTNET peaks in the second week of May with
International Migratory Bird Week. In addition to sightings reported, at
the beginning of each week a "newsletter" is posted with summaries of NO,
WT, and YW sightings to date, and tips for classroom projects and IMB
community celebrations. Let us hear how you are welcoming back the birds.
MISTNET will not be active in June, July, and August, but will resume
activity in the fall with the new school year and planning for next year's
tracking.

description: The Osprey's Nest (TON) is really aimed at a more regional
audience, namely the birders and other amateur naturalists in the
Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Long-distance callers are certainly
welcome, but we aim to cater mostly to the folks from the MD-DE-DC-VA areas
within about a 200-mile radius of DC.

You can reach TON by calling 301-989-9036. The bulletin board answers the
phone at 2400/9600 baud and is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Your communication parameters should be set to 8 data bits, 1 stop bit,
and no parity.

TON has been operational close on to 7 years now. We have between 800 and
900 users, with a solid core of about 100 or so birders who are willing to
chat about birds and good birding locales. If you're looking for something
more rgionally oriented than BIRDCHAT, by all means give us a call. -NS

who is currently on CIS who wants to participate in the Audubon Forum
please ask them to send their Name, Chapter Affiliation, and their
current CIS Id# to Phil Schaeffer at 71362,30.

We will then register their Id# and notify them when they can access the

They will receive the following information with their notification:

The Audubon Forum is an extended service forum. You will be charged at
the standard CIS rates for access on a pay-as-you-go basis. At this time
the rate is only $4.80/hr for 1200 or 2400 baud access and $9.60/hr for
