There has been no relocation of the Brown Pelican at Crescent Beach from
Tuesday Sep 13 to Wed Sep 21

SUN SEP 25 The first WHITE-THROATED SPARROW of the southbound migration was
reported
from the Reifel Refuge on Westham Is in Ladner. The bird was on the outer
dike trail immediately N of the observation tower in the W field. 2
juvenile *SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPERS* were in a large pool near the tower at
the N end of the W field.

Up to 11 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in the fields N of Burns Bog in S Delta.

At Serpentine Fen in Surrey today were 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS.

2 NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS were seen on a VNHS field trip to Dog Mt. in Mt.
Seymour Provincial Pk in N VCR.

In the Ferguson Pt--Second Beach area on the W side of Stanley Pk in VCR,
there were 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS.

Out of town, a third *BROAD-WINGED HAWK* was seen in the hawk migration
lookout in E Sooke Pk at the S end of Vancouver Island.


SAT SEP 24
The juv *SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER* was again on the W field at the Reifel
Refuge on Westham Is in Ladner. The bird is associating with LONG-BILLED
DOWTCHERS.

On the mini-pelagic trip out of Victoria on Vancouver Island, somewhat
frustrated by fog, the best bird of the trip was a basic-plumaged *YELLOW-
BILLED LOON* off William's Head to the W of Victoria.

2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in the fields to the S of Minnekhada Lodge in
NE Coquitlam.

People wondering where all the EVENING GROSBEAKS went got to can relax:
this nomadic species is moving back into the VCR area in a big way. At
Maplewood Flats in N VCR, there was a large movement of passerines.



FRI SEP 23 There was no relocation of the juvenile BROWN PELICAN that has
been loitering at Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach since Tuesday Sept. 13.

A juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was again on the W field at the Reifel
Refuge in Ladner.

4 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were on the rocky foreshore just below the Tea House
at Ferguson Pt. in Stanley Park.

2 ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS have been present for several days no in the lane
between W 22nd & W 23rd Aves in the Kerrisdale area of Vancouver.

4 late VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were over the Reifel Refuge in Ladner.

Up to 9 TURKEY VULTURES were over Pt Roberts.


THU SEP 22 Despite searches in the area there was no relocation of the
BROWN PELICAN which had been present since Tuesday September 13.

An adult basic-plumaged *COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULL* and a *LITTLE GULL* in
basic 1 plumage were both seen from the BC ferry between Vancouver &
Victoria in Active Pass between Mayne & Galiano Is.

2 BARRED OWLS were whooping it up near 4th & 248th St in Langeley.


WED SEP 21
The juvenile *BROWN PELICAN* was again at Blackie Spit in Crescent Beach
at the E end of Boundary Bay; as usual, the 3 Amigos--the LONG-BILLED
CURLEW, MARBLED GODWIT, and WHIMBREL--were here, also.

A juvenile *SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER*, the first of the southbound migration,
was on the W field at the Reifel Refuge on Westham Is in Ladner. Also here
was a PEREGRINE FALCON, and the flock of 7 feral MUTE SWANS still in the
offshore area W of the Refuge.

At Stanley Pk, the first *SWAMP SPARROW* of the southbound migration was
along the trail linking the Rose Garden with Beaver L.

3 light-morph PARASITIC JAEGERS were observed in concert harassing BONA-
PARTE'S GULLS & COMMON TERNS off W Spanish Banks on the S side of Burrard
Inlet in VCR.


TUE SEP 20
RARE BIRD ALERT: The juvenile *BROWN PELICAN* was again present at Blackie
Spit in Crescent Beach at the E end of Boundary Bay. Also present were the
3 Amigos, the LONG-BILLED CURLEW, MARBLED GODWIT, and WHIMBREL.

At Everett Crowley Pk in SE VCR, the first DARK-EYED JUNCO of the
'SLATE-COLORED' race was seen, and a 'YELLOW-SHAFTED'-type NORTHERN FLICKER
was in the 3600-block of W. 1st Ave in VCR. Over the last few days, a
movement of RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS and NORTHERN FLICKERS has been moving
through the checklist area.


MON SEP 19
RARE BIRD ALERT: The *BROWN PELICAN* was again present for the 2nd
consecutive day at Crescent Beach and Blackie Spit; also here was 1
immature-plumaged HORNED LARK.

RARE BIRD ALERT: a bird thought to be a juvenile or basic-plumaged
*YELLOW-BILLED LOON* was seen at Blackie Spit.

3 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 2 dark-morph birds and 1 light-morph, were at the E
entrance to Active Pass.
