Hello birders, this is the Bird Brain, voice of Seattle
Audubon's Bird Sightings Hotline for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23,
1994, at 11 AM.

To skip the details and just leave a message punch 5 and
wait for the tone.

For sick or injured birds call the Wild Bird Clinic at 941-
2174 [or PAWS at 743-3845 or 743-1884].

Highlights from the Washington Ornithological Convention on
the Long Beach Peninsula Sept. 17-18 include four ELEGANT
TERNS September 17 at the North Jetty of the Columbia River
-- the only reports this year in Washington -- and a fly-
over by an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at the Ilwaco airport
September 18. Four juvenile SNOWY PLOVERS were on the beach
at Ledbetter Point Sept. 17, at one of two breeding sites
known for the state. A rare in-shore sighting of an adult
SABINE'S GULL entertained WOS conventioneers Sept. 17 on the
beach at Ledbetter Pt.

A juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was reported with a small
group of PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at the Ocean Shores STP
September 17-19. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was with LEAST
SANDPIPERS on the Ocean Shores Game Range, also Sept. 18.

The EASTERN PHOEBE reported with YELLOW & ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS at the Kent Ponds September 15 could not be
relocated the next day. At the Kent ponds Sept. 16 was a
GREAT EGRET, 2 GREEN HERONS, GREATER & LESSER YELLOWLEGS and
2 NORTHERN HARRIERS. A flock of 21 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE touched down there Sept. 18, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER
was reported there Sept. 22.

GREEN HERONs, as many as 4 individuals, have been seen
regularly of late at the Montlake Fill on the UW campus.
Several WOOD DUCKS were reported from the Montlake Fill and
nearby Union Bay Sept. 10-18.

PEREGRINES are returning for the winter. "Angeline," one of
last winter's birds has displaced the father of this
summer's nesting pair and his new mate to the lower-rent
district at Harbor Island. The "Freeway Peregrine" is back
and an adult female has been feeding at the Grain Terminal
off Myrtle Edwards Park.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was reported September 18 along the
ring dike trail at the Skagit WRA near a "blue spruce" west
of the boat launch parking lot. A BARRED OWL was spotted
nearby along the dike trail the same day.

A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was at Swantown on Whidbey Is. Sept. 11
while nearby at Penn Cove there were 8 SURFBIRDS and 4 RUDDY
TURNSTONES with a flock of 300 BLACK TURNSTONES. FRANKLIN'S
GULLS are still present at the Everett Ponds as of
September 14. A PEREGRINE and 42 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE were overhead there Sept. 13.

GREAT EGRETS have been reported in above average numbers in
recent weeks. Besides the Kent Pond bird there were 15 on
the east shore of Willapa Bay September 18, up to a dozen
have been counted at Ocean Shores, and 150 are near their
nesting colony on Potholes Reservoir west of Moses Lake,
concentrated by the current low water levels.

Two PARASITIC JAEGERS appear to be hanging out at the oil
piers between Richmond Beach and Edmonds north of Seattle.
Fair shorebirding has been reported from the marsh near the
ferry landing in Edmonds: 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, two
VIRGINIA RAILS, and a GREEN HERON were noted there Sept. 11.
Another promising spot is at Kennedy Creek on Mud Bay north
of Olympia. A FRANKLIN'S GULL, a WILLET, and a MARBLED
GODWIT were there Sept. 15.

Two adult WHITE-TAILED KITES with a juvenile were located at
their traditional site east of Raymond in Pacific Co.
between Lebam and Frances along Elk Prairie Rd. September
18.

Yours truly found three WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGANS at the
summit of Big Snow Mountain above the Middle Fork of the
Snoqualmie River Sept. 21. Many MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS and
AMERICAN PIPITS were migrating along the high ridges above
6000 feet that day. A PRAIRIE FALCON was hunting above
Paradise on Mt. Rainier Sept. 18.

Thirty Lewis's Woodpeckers and 5 Lesser Goldfinches were
reported at Lyle at the east end of the Columbia Gorge Sept.
18. There are several FRANKLIN'S GULLS now present at the
Othello STP. A very large concentration of 400+ GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE was at the McNary NWR east of Pasco
Sept. 18 and two SNOW GEESE were noted on the Saddle Mtn.
NWR last week also.

For SAS field trips, or for information on conservation and
education issues please call the office at 523-4483 during

That's all for now. If you have news to report, wait for
the tone, then give your name, phone number, and the
details. Thanks and good birding.
