Mike Denny has a male Anna's Hummingbird coming to his feeder in
College Place, Washington -- that's near Walla Walla. You're
welcome to stop by and look for the bird. The Denny's live at
323 Scenic View. Take College Avenue to 12th Street, turn east.
Follow 12th to Central and turn south. They live on the corner of
Central and Scenic View. Give Mike a call at 509-529-0080 if you
need more directions or to let him know you are coming.
.
On September 18, Mike saw a Golden-crowned Sparrow in a huge flock
of White-crowned Sparrows at Sunnydale Park west of Paterson,
Washington. Also in the flock was a single Fox Sparrow and a
couple of Orange-crowned Warblers. To get to the park, head west
out of Paterson on Washington 14. See Washington DeLorme p. 28,
a-4 for Paterson. Mike also reports a flock of 400-500 or so
Greater White-fronted Geese at McNary Wildlife Refuge on September
17. To get to these birds, take Washington 12 and at Francisco's
Restaurant, turn right, east, into the refuge. Follow this down
to Burbank Slough. The birds were on the north side of the road.

On September 23, Dave Holick and I observed 4 American Golden
Plovers, along with a few Long-billed Dowitchers, Pectoral and
Baird's Sandpipers, and a single Semipalmated Plover at Mann's
Lake east of the Lewiston Orchards. Mann's Lake is on Idaho
DeLorme p. 54, a-1. To get to Mann's Lake when entering Lewiston
from the north via US 95, take the US 12 exit at the bottom of the
grade, cross the Clearwater River and take the first left toward
East Lewiston. At the "T" intersection with the blinking yellow
lights, turn right onto Lindsay Creek Road and follow it until it
terminates at Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle and follow it
through the 20 m.p.h. right hand turn. Take the next left and
follow it straight into the dead end and Mann's Lake.
.
I found, on September 18, the Bewick's Wren previously reported by
Dan Svingen along the Coyote Grade southeast of Genesee. However,
I saw at least two birds there. Today, September 23, Dave Holick
and I heard, but could not coerce into view, at least two
individuals. This gulch of hawthorne, serviceberry and a few
scattered cottonwoods is an interesting spot. We also observed
Golden-crowned Kinglets, Downy Woodpecker, Western Bluebird and
chickadees there. To get there from US 95, take the Genesee
turn-off and travel east through town. Just before the road veers
left, turn right onto Central Grade Road. At the first "Y" stay
left on the pavement and Coyote Grade Road. As the pavement ends,
turn right onto Coyote Grade Road again. At the next "Y"
intersection, turn right again. Just a little past the first
house, when you see brush growing up the hillside above you on
both sides, there's a gravel pull-out on the left. You're there.
See Idaho DeLorme p. 58, c as in chickadee 1, and p. 54, a-1.

Good birding!
