A while back I posted some thoughts on birdsong recognition. Several people
wrote back to get more information on Caltech's birdsong lab, and I was
embarrassed by how little I could tell them (it's been about 12 years). For
those who are still curious, I found this recent blurb in the Caltech News
on the professor conducting that research, in case anyone wants to follow it
up:

Mark Konishi, Bing Professor of Behavioral Biology, has been honored with
the Acoustical Society of America's Science Writing Award for a professional
in acoustics. Konishi's winning article, "Listening with Two Ears"
appeared in the April 1993 issue of Scientific American.

Although it isn't clear from the title, I think he does most of his research
on bird behavior, through studying birdsong. And obviously he's still
there, working with "acoustics". Now if only I had an e-mail address, we
could post him all our musings and he could poke holes in them!
