SENATOR'S PROPOSED BILL ENDANGERS SPECIES ACT / CORPORATIONS HELPED WITH
REWRITE

Timothy Egan

Stevenson, Wash. OF WASHINGTON

Taking aim at what may be the nation's most powerful environmental
law, Senator Slade Gorton of Washington unveiled a bill yesterday that
would scrap major provisions of the Endangered Species Act.

In a speech before timber industry executives meeting in this resort
town on the Columbia River, Gorton announced a plan to do away with
most of the strict requirements to save plants and animals that
biologists say are heading for extinction.

The draft of the bill, which Gorton plans to introduce after Congress
returns from its spring recess, was written by a group of Washington,
D.C., lawyers who represent timber, mining, ranching and utility
interests that have been most critical of the law.

In an interview yesterday, Gorton said he did not consult with
environmentalists.

``I already know what their views are, and they don't want any changes
(in the law),'' he said.
