This is one I've been chewing on lately. I think, in some way, most of
us get out there and bird, not only as a form of
recreation/relaxation/eduction, but as a way of trying to reconnect with
much that has been bred out of us. We don't have any connection with the
stuff we buy at Safeway..most of us don't hunt, so we buy little
plastic-wrapped packages of body parts. We exchange pictures of dead
presidents for them, which we got for staying inside all day doing something
that generates more pictures ofdead presidents so we can afford the time to do
what we really want to do--bird, or hunt, or...
We live a spiritually impoverished state and try to reconnect any way we
can. Hunting is a reconnection with the visceral. When I go with my
friend and his bird kills a rabbit and he hands me the knife and says
"clean it," it ceases to be theoretical and speculatory...ever smell the
inside of a rabbit you've opened up? A hundred years ago in many rural
areas this was subsisttence activity. Today, for many of us, it's
classified as sport. I think, however, it has a spiritual dimension that
we ofverlook in the emotional respnse. I read an interesting interview
with Richard Nelson. he talks about living with the eskimos and hunting
with them. I'm still sorting it out...
