Repair of the South Jetty (Westport) breach was accomplished last fall by
the placement of a large quantity of dredged material. Dredge spoils can
support snowy plover nesting, so I have been keeping an eye on the site.
Because this potential nesting area is adjacent to a busy state park
(Westhaven), it is hard to be optomistic about plovers taking up
residence, but I hope to catch an individual or pair indicating interest,
at least. Birders seeking jettybirds are encouraged to scan the dredged
"wasteland" for plovers and report any sightings to me.

A visit on April 21 at 07:30 revealed, as usual, no snowys, but the
following avian delights were present:

Black Oystercatcher (2) resting and preening on the beach of Half Moon Bay.
Surfbird (29) and Black Turnstone (7) on the jetty.
Harlequin Duck (3 males) on and near the jetty.

The rock shorebird counts are probably low, because my concentration was
on the breach repair fill.
